The Brain

The donor vehicle (as they say in kit car magazines) was a 700 MHz G4 iMac.

Even though we are not in any particular hurry, I clock everything that I can get my hands on. It's a kind of addiction, so this puppy went to 800 Meg.

Now, I have to warn you that I am in electronics engineer with years of experience in surfacemount. How many years? Well, I still have 1206 components in my parts drawers, many of which they don't make any more, at least not in such large sizes.

1206 means 120 thou by 60 thou (0.120" by 0.060") - huge by modern standards.

The next common size down is 0805, which I use most of the time, great for prototyping.

Here's the problem: the iMac hardware divider uses 0603 resistors to set the speed. That's 60 thou by 30 thou. I use a tiny soldering iron, a pair of tweezers and one of those magnifying glass light thingies on an arm. And I've been doing this forever, so it's fairly straightforward.

Unless you have the right equipment, some surfacemount experience and some spare 0603 resistors, I really don't recommend that you try this yourself. You will break it. It will be a total clock up. Then I will buy it for peanuts on eBay, just like this one.

If you're feeling brave, here are the overclocking details, stolen from Mr Mystic: http://www.bekkoame.ne.jp/~t-imai/imacfj1.html
