The Hard Disk

Just in case you're wondering, the hard disk mounting plate also doubles as the heat sink. I made a substantial block bracket to mount the hard drive plate onto the heat pipe. The other bracket was similar, but only because it's convenient - this one is not a heat path.

This drive is the 250 GB Barracuda 7200, quite snappy for a boring old IDE at 8.5ms. It seems a lot faster than the original drive. Access time is important, especially for a server application.  That's why real servers use SCSI drives and don't live in flowerpots.

The slots on the plate are probably not necessary, they just happen to be there.  The plate came out of an old monitor.
